Ghee Chapati | Butter Roti Recipe – It’s a layered flatbread made with whole wheat flour and butter or ghee. It’s a very soft and delicious roti. It’s perfect for a lunch box and also for a special occasion.

What is the difference between Normal Chapati and Ghee Chapati?

Normal Chapati is mostly without any oil or ghee. It is also just a single layer.

But Ghee or Butter chapati has three layers. Since we are folding three times, and each time we spread a little bit of ghee or melted butter over that layer.

Is Ghee Chapati good for health?

I read the below statements in NDTV FOOD webpage, that changed my view of Ghee Chapati.

“Experts claim that ghee chapati helps to bring down the glycemic index of the chapati. It makes you feel fuller for a long time, this helps to avoid binge eating later.”

Bangalore based Nutritionist “Dr Anju Sood” also recommends eating chapatis with a little ghee on top.

According to health practitioner and Nutritionist “Shilpa Arora”, Ghee consists of fat-soluble vitamins, which aid weight loss. Ghee also plays an important role in balancing hormones and maintaining healthy cholesterol.

How do we keep Chapatis soft for a long time?

With a little bit of ghee or butter on the chapati or roti, keeps the chapati remain soft for a long time. One important thing is kneading the dough well enough with water.

How long chapatis or roti stays good?

At room temperature, freshly prepared chapatis stay good for almost 12 – 18 hrs, by wrapping it in aluminium foil. After that, it develops fungal growth it seems.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Whole wheat flour
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • Salt required level
  • Water To Knead the dough
  • Ghee / Melted butter To spread on the layers and for chapati as well.

Instructions

  • Take a wide mixing bowl, Add the wheat flour, salt and oil.
  • Slightly heat the water, Luke warm water is best to knead the dough. Add the water little bit at a time.
  • Start kneading the dough, add water as per the requirement. Press the dough well. Once it is done, slightly apply the oil and cover the dough. Rest for a few mins.
  • Once the resting time over, take a small size of the dough, spread or dust with some flour, start spreading with rolling pin. Now the first layer is ready, apply some ghee or melted butter on top of it.
  • Now for second layer, fold that bread. Spread some ghee on that layer as well.
  • Now for third layer, fold it once again and make a triangle shape like below.
  • Now start pressing again, spread little bit like below, if you want, you can dust some flour before pressing.
  • Now, the chapati is ready to cook. Heat the pan, place the chapati on the pan, start cooking on both sides. Spread some ghee if you like, while cooking.
  • If you knead the chapati well, it will fluff up like this. Cook on other side as well.
  • Once it is done, you can see the beautiful layers so well. Now transfer it to the serving bowl.

Serve this some nice gravy like Paneer butter masala or Peas curry for better taste.
