Horse gram is known as Kollu in Tamil and Ulavalu in Telugu. It has lots of health benefits, protein-rich lentil, low in fat and helps in weight loss, low in lipid and sodium content, and its slow digestible starch make ideal for diabetic and obese patients. I learnt this recipe from my mom, Its completely Authentic Tamil Nadu Style recipe.

Ingredients:

  • Horse gram (Kollu) – 1/4 cup
  • Water – 1 cup (to cook kollu)
  • Tamarind water – 1/2 cup
  • Garlic – 3 to 4 cloves
  • Pepper – 1 tsp
  • Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Coriander Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Red Chili – 1 to 2
  • Fenugreek Seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Curry and Coriander leaves – few
  • Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Tomato – 1 medium sized
  • Oil – 2 to 3 tbsp
  • Salt – required level
  • Turmeric – 1 tsp

Description:

  1. Get the ingredients ready.
  2. Take ¼ cup of horse gram with 1 cup of water in a pressure cooker, cook for about 10 minutes. Drain the water and keep aside.
  3. Soak a small lemon size tamarind in water for about 15 minutes and make a puree out of it and keep aside.
  4. Heat oil in a pan and add pepper, cumin and garlic cloves. Saute for few mins.
  5. Then add red chili, coriander and fenugreek seeds, saute for another few mins.
  6. Add tomatoes and cooked horse gram, cook for about 3 mins and cool it down.
  7. Grind the mixture to a smooth paste.
  8. Now heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and curry leaves. Once it starts to pop, add horse gram pate, tamarind water, cooked lentil water and 1 cup of water.
  9. Cook for a couple of minutes, then add salt and turmeric powder. Now cover with lid and cook for about 2 more mins.
  10. Now add chopped coriander leaves, give a good mix to the rasam or soup. Turn off the burner.
  11. Transfer to a container. Kollu Rasam | Horse gram Soup is ready to serve.

Step by step process with picture representation:

Get the ingredients ready.
