Ridge Gourd (Peerkangai) Chutney Recipe
Ridge gourd chutney is very yummy and it goes well with Idly and Dosa. It is know as Peerkangai in Tamil. Ridge gourd is a fruit and it belongs to cucumber family. Ridge gourd is popular as vegetable in Asia. It’s rich in fiber and contains anti-inflammatory properties, protects from allergy, helps to fight bad cholesterol and it reduces weight.

- Ridge gourd – 1 cup (finely chopped)
- Onion – 1 medium sized (finely chopped)
- Tomato – 1 medium sized (finely chopped)
- Tamarind – 1 small piece
- Curry leaves and coriander leaves
- Turmeric powder, Chili powder and Salt – 1 tbsp
- Oil – 2 tbsps
- Coconut – 2 to 3 tbsps (grated)
- Seasoning Items – mustard seeds, chana dal, urad dal and cumin seeds.
Get the ingredients ready. Wash and peel the skin of ridge gourd. No need to peel completely. Semi peeling is enough.
Heat oil, saute the seasonings first, then add onions and curry leaves into that after a min. saute until the onion changes color.
Add the chopped tomatoes into that and cook for some more time.
Once the tomatoes start to leave oil, add the chopped ridge gourd and saute well. After a few mins, add salt, turmeric powder and chili powder into that.
No need to add water, The ridge gourd itself will leave water while cooking and cook until the ridge gourd turns soft.
While cooking, add tamarind paste and coriander leaves as well. Once it is done. Leave it to cool.
For grinding, Transfer the cooked ridge gourd into a mixer and add coconut also into that.
Grind it to a slightly coarse paste.
Now the tasty ridge gourd chutney is ready to be served. If you would like seasoning on top it. You can add.
Serve with idly and dosa.
