France Aroma in India – Pondy

In the middle of Mechanical Life, My Husband and I decided to get away from our daily routine and wanted to spend some time in a beautiful place, that’s where “Pondy” came in. Pondicherry is the capital city of the Indian union territory of Puducherry, India.

Pondicherry was colonized by French, Dutch, British and Portuguese in the 17th Century. Pondicherry still has a community of French people living in the city, French is also an official language and their influence is reflected in culture and other factors. Most fascinating places in Pondy are its beautiful beaches, Aurobindo ashram and French colonies. The city is very clean, pleasant and maintained well since lots of tourist people are visited throughout the year.

The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual community (ashram) located in Pondicherry, The most important organisation also inspired by the vision of Sri Aurobindo is Auroville, an international township founded by the Mother and dedicated to human unity.

Auroville

Auroville (City of Dawn) founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa (known as “the Mother”) and designed by architect Roger Anger. Auroville is meant to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony. The purpose of Auroville is to realize human unity.

Silence is maintained inside the Matrimandir to ensure the tranquility of the space and the entire area surrounding the Matrimandir is called Peace area. Inside the Matrimandir, a spiraling ramp leads upwards to an air-conditioned chamber of polished white marble referred to as “a place to find one’s consciousness”.

Paradise Beach

If you are visiting Pondicherry, then Paradise beach is a must visit place. One can take a boat from the Chunnambur boat house to reach there. It is also called Island beach in Pondicherry. From the boat house, it will take approximately 30 minutes to reach the island, depending on the kind of boat you hire. One can take a sharing boat or a private boat. The island is very well maintained, the shore is clean and water is calm, with soft waves.

A truly magical place, one must visit this place at least once in their life time.  It’s easily accessible from any part of the country. Winter might be the best time if anyone wants to avoid the humidity and heat.

Happy Travelling 🙂

  1. Malini lovely clicks. I have been to Pondicherry and I really wonder how they maintain so well. It’s a beautiful place. Have been to few places like the beach, Arabindo ashram …. never been to Auroville. Good to get some time out of the monotonous routine.

    • Thank you Meena. Exactly, I also felt the same, how would they maintain this well in-spite of the crowd they have. It’s nice to visit some beautiful and peaceful places like this once in a while. I am glad you also have been there. 🙂
